B8 | Choline

Choline is the building block of acetylcholine, which is one of the essential neurotransmitters. This is the name given to the substances that transmit impulses between our nerve cells. A sufficient supply of this particular transmitter has been linked to protection against certain psychiatric diseases and to protection against memory disorders. It occurs naturally mainly in animal foods such as beef, poultry, fish, dairy products and eggs. The WHO recommended daily intake of choline for a healthy adult has been set at 550 µg per day for men and 425 µg per day for women.

‍Consumption of choline has been shown to contribute to:‍

  • normal cognitive function
  • normal cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure
  • normal transport of lipids from the liver
  • fat and cholesterol metabolism
  • normal mental function
